Who could become New York’s new mayor

Et was a good, almost triumphant week in New York. Andrew Cuomo invited visitors to the city’s tallest skyscraper, the World Trade Center at number one, on Tuesday, and he announced much-awaited news: Almost all corona restrictions should be lifted with immediate effect. “We can now return to life as we know it,” said the governor of the state that New York belongs to. No more distance rules in restaurants and cinemas, no more masks at the hairdresser’s. New York should feel largely normal and perhaps live up to its reputation as the city that never sleeps.

This was made possible because the state has reached a milestone: 70 percent of people have received at least one vaccination. “Give New Yorkers a round of applause,” Cuomo encouraged the gathered dignitaries. To celebrate the day, he set off fireworks in the harbor, and the Empire State Building shone in blue and gold, the colors of the state. And the governor wasn’t the only one who put people in a good mood. On the same day, Mayor Bill de Blasio also held a press conference, and what was until recently an occasion for crisis communication was a lot easier this time. De Blasio spoke in detail about the results of a survey among New Yorkers about their favorite pizza topping: “Ladies and gentlemen, salami has won,” he said and took a hearty bite into a slice of pizza. The day before, he had already announced a big parade to celebrate “New York City’s return”.
