WHO considers monkeypox status a global emergency

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – The World Health Organization (WHO) established an emergency committee to consider the status of the disease monkeypox or monkey pox become a global emergency, Thursday (23/6/2022).

If it is a global emergency, then monkey pox will be of international concern and the governments of each country must increase their vigilance against the disease.

Quoted from The Economistthe certainty of the emergency status of monkeypox will be decided in the coming days.

The establishment of an emergency committee by the WHO has drawn criticism from some experts.

According to them, the WHO’s decision, which was taken only after the disease spread to Western countries, has strengthened the attitude of injustice between rich and poor countries during the coronavirus pandemic.

Declaring monkeypox as a global emergency means the UN health agency considers the outbreak an extraordinary event and that the disease risks spreading across more borders.

It will give the same difference to monkey pox with the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.

Many scientists doubt that such a declaration will help curb the epidemic, as developed countries that have recorded the latest cases have moved quickly to stop it.

Last week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the recent epidemic of monkeypox identified in more than 40 countries, mostly in Europe, as an unusual and alarming disease.
