World Health Organization says COVID-19 It’s not an endemic disease. Advise vulnerable groups to get vaccinated against
Today (May 7, 2023) Medical Genome Center Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital Mahidol University revealed that on May 6, 2023, two World Health Organization experts are Dr. Mike Ryan Executive Director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Program; and Dr. Maria Van Kerkow Technical Lead for COVID-19 Response of the World Health Organization Answered 3 important questions that people were interested in asking via digital media. After the World Health Organization announced the end of the emergency in the COVID-19 crisis on May 5, 2023 as follows:
1. The 2019 Coronavirus cannot be eradicated from the world. (eradication) or local eradication (elimination) in the same way that the smallpox virus was eradicated by vaccination in the past Or the polio virus that is on the verge of extinction from the world by vaccination. (Smallpox virus and polio virus) have outbreaks only in humans. So it’s easy to control or get rid of. Corona can be transmitted between animals and humans. and from humans to animals (zoonotic infection), it is very difficult to eradicate viruses that have spread in animals and crossed over in humans.
2. COVID-19 The World Health Organization still considers it to be a global epidemic (Pandemic), not endemic (Endemic).
3. The COVID-19 outbreak is not a seasonal infectious disease like influenza. Because the World Health Organization has not yet found an outbreak pattern for each time of the year. It can cause an outbreak when it is at any time of the year.
4. The World Health Organization does not currently have sufficient information to determine the appropriate timing. or frequency of vaccination and booster needles But it encourages vaccination among vulnerable groups to boost their immunity when an outbreak of COVID-19 occurs.
According to the Center for Medical Genome, the declaration of a global public health emergency related to COVID-19 was declared by the World Health Organization on January 2020 and ends on May 5, 2023. Therefore, the duration of the global health emergency declaration is approximately 3 years.
