WHO Brings Good News, One Dose of HPV Vaccine Effective Prevents Cervical Cancer!

Jakarta

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the results of monitoring the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine for cervical cancer in recent years. Administration of a single dose of HPV vaccine has been shown to be effective in preventing the risk of cervical cancer, comparable to giving two and three doses.

The WHO Strategic Advisory Group on Immunization (SAGE) confirmed this report to be game-changer for the prevention of cervical cancer. The reason is, cervical cancer is ‘silent killer’ in women.

More than 95 percent of cervical cancers are caused by sexually transmitted HPV. Cervical cancer is also the fourth most common type of cancer in women in the world, 90 percent of which come from low- and middle-income countries.

“The HPV vaccine is very effective for the prevention of HPV serotypes 16 & 18, which causes 70 percent of cervical cancers,” said Dr Alejandro Cravioto, Chair of SAGE, quoted from the WHO’s official website, Tuesday (12/4/2022).

“SAGE urges all countries to introduce the HPV vaccine. This recommendation will allow more girls and women to be vaccinated and thereby prevent them from cervical cancer and all its consequences during their lifetime,” he explained.

Here are the WHO’s new recommendations:

  • Girls aged 9-14 years can receive one or two doses of the vaccine
  • Young women aged 15-20 years can receive one or two doses of the vaccine
  • Women older than 21 years can receive two doses at an interval of six months.

Immune disorders, including HIV, can receive three doses of the HPV vaccine if possible. The recommendations will be updated further if further evidence is found regarding the efficacy of the HPV vaccine.
