WHO boss Tedros says he will not take sides in Ethiopia conflict

The WHO chief denies taking sides in the armed conflict in Ethiopia. In the northern province of Tigray, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) are fighting each other.

WHO boss Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was born in Tigray, the region where there is now a bloody conflict. He was also Minister of Health in a government led by the TPLF.

An Ethiopian army chief today accused Tedros of providing assistance to local authorities in the insurgent region. General Birhanu Jula said, according to Reuters news agency, that Tedros “himself is a member of that group” and called him a criminal. The general did not provide any evidence.

Tedros contradicts the allegations in a statement on Twitter: “It is not true. I am only on one side and that is the side of peace.” In the statement he refers to his own experiences as a child with the “destructive nature of war”.
