The Buenos Aires Minister of Security, Sergio Berni, was attacked for group of bus drivers who demanded greater security after the murder of a driver. The official had appeared on General Paz avenue, where the protest was taking place, to talk with the workers.
Los bus drivers from the western suburbs demonstrated to demand greater security at the different points along the route of the lines, after a driver of line 620, identified as Daniel Barrientos, was killed with a shot to the chest while working.
Those who demonstrated pointed out that the acts of insecurity in the area are repeated and constant, and represent a risk in the daily work of all the drivers who travel through the suburbs.
According to the police report, the driver’s murder —who was 65 years old and one month away from retiring— occurred in Virrey del Pino, La Matanza, around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bernardino Escribano and Cullen streets, when at least two armed robbers got into the collective that he was driving to rob those who were traveling in the vehicle.
One of the passengers was an officer from the Urban Containment Operations Department (DUOC), Barracas headquarters, of the City Police; and after he showed his identification, the assailants started shooting. Barrientos received the impact of one of the shots in the chest, which caused his death on the spot. Always according to the first official version, the shooting by the criminals continued against the cash on board, until they managed to get off the bus and escape in a car.
The murder investigation is being conducted by the fiscal Gaston Duplaá and a person was arrested for the crime, who will be subjected to examination to determine his alleged participation in the homicide.
The attack on Sergio Berni occurred while the minister sought to intervene in a court on the General Peace, at the height of Lookout Hills.
The official usually appears in places where there are massive claims for insecurity and, on more than one occasion, he came to talk with the victims of crimes that occurred in the province of Buenos Aires. However, on this occasion, the anger escalated in such a way that, as soon as he arrived, he was cornered against one of the walls that lead to General Paz avenue.
In addition to hitting and shoving, the minister received insults, and they threw stones, bottles and food at him. Given the lack of security personnel and police to guard him, Berni was surrounded by journalists and other people who were at the scene and tried to stop the attack.
A little more than twenty minutes later, a group of infantry from the City Police carried out an operation, for which he was escorted to a car on a side street that removed him from the place.
“Guys, I’m here, first, because I understand the problem you are going through. We were working to stop the perpetrators. I bank whatever, but if we don’t talk, we’re not going to solve anything. I put my face up, I’m not like the rest,” said the minister amid shouting and insults, and insisted: “I’m not hiding, I’m here.”
