Nellie lost her husband a year ago. Since then, life has lost its meaning. Her daughters hope to change their living conditions and move into a small private house with a garden that Nellie has always dreamed of living in an apartment in a multi-storey house.
By nature, Nellie is a quiet and peaceful, but very sincere, intelligent and life-loving woman, much loved by her late husband. However, since her husband is no more, Nelly is not happy – her favorite activities have been neglected, and basically her whole life has been stopped and put on a break. Nellie would rather crawl into bed, chew cookies and forget about the TV screen. Because it hurts. Because Nellie doesn’t know how to live alone. But Nellie tries to keep her pain to herself, because she doesn’t want to hurt her daughters and grandchildren, whom she loves very much.
Nellie’s life will change as she has to reckon with her new neighbor, Archia.
Archie has a plan – she wants to live to be 100 years old. Like the Japanese, who live on the island of Okinawa, which has an average age of 84 and has four times as many centuries as anywhere else in the world. That is why it is called the “Immortal Island”. The secret of Japanese longevity lies in several facts: they eat only home-grown products or fish caught themselves, eat small portions. Fresh air is no less important than an active lifestyle.
Archy also knows from experience that to feel good, you have to be active and move a lot. There are various sports devices invented by Arcia in the garden – a bicycle that does not ride forward, but can be used to ride on the spot, a barrel where rainwater gets in, and when it is pulled behind the rope, the water spills out with a jerk. Archy, like the Japanese, keeps track of what he eats, and cooking is one of his heart’s desire. Archie grows everything that can be grown and buys in the store only what she can’t make herself.
The secret of Japanese longevity also lies in the fact that they know the importance of rest and emotional well-being, so they give up all kinds of stress and choose to lead a simple lifestyle in which optimism and joy for every day are important. Archie’s optimism and kindness to people are his hallmarks. Although Archie sometimes feels lonely, he can’t admit it because he believes that women can only cause unnecessary stress. In the evenings he loves watching the sunset and sometimes playing the guitar.
