WHO appreciates the services of the Panzi Hospital in the fight against the Coronavirus
A joint delegation from the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, Kinshasa branch, was received on August 31 by Dr. Denis Mukwege in order to inquire about the work carried out by the Panzi Hospital in the response against the Coronavirus in the province of South Kivu.
Led by Dr Jonh Ochidiema, WHO Covid-19 surveillance team lead in the DRC, the delegation visited the systems put in place by the Panzi Hospital to effectively combat the pandemic.
At the end of this visit, Dr. Ochidiema kept a rather positive impression, especially with regard to the laboratory services and the surveillance system.
To this end, the framework of the World Health Organization said “Dazzled by the capacity of the laboratory service having equipment capable of performing at at least 290 tests per day; which is enormous and it is a great capacity which must be exploited! It is extraordinary as resources that should be capitalized ”, a reconnu Dr. John Ochidiema!
And this one to continue : “Panzi also has a support system which can give best practices and which can be shared with others”!
In addition, the head of the Covid-19 section at the WHO praised the local expertise used by Panzi in its response device against the pandemic. What sets the hospital dear to the Nobel Prize apart from other structures in the country.
“I was enormously struck by the local expertise! The quality of care for Covid-19 patients here is very appreciable ”, he confessed.
Nonetheless, in terms of challenges, Dr. Ochidiema recognized that it is imperative to “Correct late references from patients who have been hanging out elsewhere”.
South Kivu among the most affected provinces
Note that the province of South Kivu is one of the provinces strongly affected by the third wave of Covid-19, along with North Kivu, Ituri, Haut-Katanga and Lualaba.
Thus, Dr. Ochidiema hopes that the experience of Dr. Denis Mukwege can always bring a plus in the eradication of this scourge on a national scale.
« As we know Dr. Mukwege had to lead in the early hours the provincial coordination of the response under the leadership of the governor and by this time there had been a lot of progress. It’s always interesting to discuss with him and get his technical guidance on what is being done to improve the response against Covid-19 here in the province of South Kivu.».
In South Kivu, the Panzi Hospital is considered a center of excellence in terms of service and health care for Covid-19 patients, given the logistics and the quality of the staff it mobilizes for these purposes.
Nevertheless, despite these efforts, the Coronavirus remains a reality in the provinces. Hence the importance of multiplying even more efforts.
