The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that 6 more Marburg virus cases were detected in Equatorial Guinea, bringing the total number of cases to 15.

Marburg virus continues to spread

According to the written statement from WHO, the number of confirmed cases in the laboratory reached 15 with 6 new cases in Equatorial Guinea. While 11 of these cases died, the fate of a confirmed case is unknown.

While the number of possible cases in the country increased to 23, the most affected region was Bata in Litoral province.

WHO continues to support the Ministry of Health of Equatorial Guinea by strengthening different intervention methods.

On 30 March, WHO assessed the public health risk posed by this epidemic as very high at the national level, high at the subregional level, medium at the regional level and low at the global level, and recommended restrictions on international travel or trade to Equatorial Guinea.

The first Marburg virus case in Equatorial Guinea was announced on 13 February.

MARBURG VIRUS

Marburg virus, which is stated to be a close relative of Ebola, was first detected in a laboratory in Marburg, Germany in 1967.

The Marburg virus, which is transmitted through fruit bats, spreads among humans through bodily fluids or contact of infected persons. Symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, weakness, and vomiting occur suddenly in infected individuals, and severe hemorrhagic symptoms develop in many patients within 7 days.

The mortality rate of Marburg virus, which does not have a vaccine or a special treatment, varies between 23 percent and 90 percent. (AA)
