The Delta COVID strain has already spread to 104 countries and will soon become the dominant strain in the world. This was stated by the head of the WHO, Tedros Ghebreyesus, informs TASS on Monday, 12 July.
Gebreyesus recalled that this mutation of the coronavirus has a higher degree of infectivity compared to other mutations. The head of WHO also pointed to the current deterioration of the global epidemiological situation and an increase in the number of cases.
“The past week was the fourth in a row that saw an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide. This increase was recorded in all but one of the WHO regions,” Gebreyesus said.
He noted that mortality rates due to complications of the disease are also increasing. At the same time, the most difficult situation remains in countries with limited access to coronavirus vaccines.
Finally, Gebreyesus stressed that the pandemic has not ended anywhere.
