Liputan6.com, Jakarta Recently the World Health Organization (WHO) and world leaders discussed strategies for dealing with the next potential pandemic, including Disease X.

Disease X is a term to describe a disease that is not yet known but has the potential to cause a global health crisis.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the World Economic Forum or WEF in Davos, January 17 2023, said that the next pandemic after COVID-19 might be caused by a hypothetical “placeholder” virus called “Disease X.”

WHO estimates that the disease may already be on its way. According to scientists, Disease X can be 20 times more deadly than COVID-19.

Also present at WEF Davos online, epidemiologist Dicky Budiman gave an explanation to Health Liputan6.com related to what WHO said.

According to Dicky, the meeting mainly discussed the world’s readiness to face the threat of the next pandemic.

“And one of the things discussed by the WHO Director General in Davos was Desease X or Disease X which is a hypothetical disease. “A disease whose pathogen is not yet known but could cause a major pandemic threat in the future,” said Dicky to Health Liputan6.com via voice message quoted, Thursday (25/1/2024).

Dicky said that this was nothing new. The reason is, in the WHO priority list, Disease X was included in 2018.

“This highlights the potential risk of emerging infectious diseases which would pose a significant threat to public health. Could be the next pandemic (next pandemic) or what is called public health emergency international concern,” explained Dicky.
