The World Health Organization announced this Friday (15) that it is monitoring cases of severe acute hepatitis in children in Europe. The cases, however, would not be so far.
According to the entity, until April 8, 74 cases were reported in the United Kingdom. In the country, the disease was detected in children aged 1 to 10 years. Six patients underwent liver transplantation. There are reports below 10 also in Spain and Ireland.
The WHO expects even more cases in the coming days, which would be “very likely”, according to the institution.
What is known so far?
Laboratory tests ruled out the possibility that the disease was caused by the already known hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, E and D (when applicable).
Symptoms of the disease include high levels of liver enzymes, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
The WHO also informs that there are reports of “several cases” related to children infected by the new virus. coronavírusalthough its role in the evolution of hepatitis is still unclear.
“WHO is closely monitoring the situation with other member states and the UK and partners for cases with similar profiles.”
