An expert group advising the World Health Organization on the COVID-19 vaccine has recommended that older adults and people with weak immune systems receive an extra dose of the vaccine as part of their regular immunization schedule, in concordance with what many rich countries like Great Britain, France and the United States have recommended in advance for their populations.
At a news conference Monday, WHO vaccination director Dr. Kate O’Brien said the group recommends that people with compromised immune systems “should get an extra dose” of all vaccines approved by the World Health Organization. the WHO, in addition to the two normally recommended doses, so that it produces an immune response that protects them from becoming seriously ill, from hospitalizations and from death by COVID.
O’Brien added that this third dose should be given to people sometime between one and three months after receiving the second dose and is not considered a booster.
O’Brien stressed that this recommendation is not valid for young, healthy adults who have a normal immune response to vaccination and do not have pre-existing diseases. The WHO expert group recommended that, if possible, people receive the same vaccine as their original immunization.
