A joint research team from The Ohio State University Veterinary School, National Institutes of Health (NIH), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) announced on the 30th that the COVID-19 virus entering the body of a white-tailed deer mutates quickly and in various ways. The results of this research were published in the August 28 issue of Nature Communications, an international journal in the field of basic science and engineering.
The research team randomly selected 1,522 white-tailed deer living in Ohio and tested them for Corona 19. As a result, more than 10% of the samples tested positive for COVID-19, and about 30 cases were found to be infected from humans.
The research team randomly selected 80 of the collected samples and analyzed the whole genome sequence, and found various variants of the virus in the body of the white-tailed deer. The results of this study show that white-tailed deer are likely reservoirs of the COVID-19 virus like bats.
