White paper: China’s international education welcomes a strong recovery, Britain and the United States are still the main destinations for studying abroad

Chinanews.com, Beijing, February 27th. The “2023 White Paper on Research on Internationalized Schools in China” (hereinafter referred to as the “White Paper”) was released in Beijing on the 26th. The “White Paper” shows that the number of students enrolled in international schools in 2022 will increase by 23% compared with 2019, and China’s international education is ushering in a strong recovery.

The “White Paper” shows that the number of international schools/international departments (including international classes) in Mainland China will be 1,243 in 2022, a net increase of 19 compared to 2021. Although the growth rate has declined compared with previous years, it still shows a positive growth trend The international education industry is still very active.

According to the “White Paper”, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Beijing have the largest number of international schools in mainland China, and the number of international schools is more than 100. The distribution of the number of admission letters issued by prestigious overseas schools to mainland Chinese students is roughly the same as the distribution of the number of international schools. For example, the 2022 class of mainland Chinese students received a total of 169 admission notices issued by American Ivy League universities (referred to as Ivy League schools), distributed in 16 provinces and cities, of which 5 provinces and cities in the north, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Shaanxi received admission notices from Ivy League schools. A total of 149 books, accounting for 88.17% of the total.

The “White Paper” shows that among the admission notices issued by overseas universities at the undergraduate level received by mainland Chinese students in 2022, 32.08% came from American universities, 35.18% came from British universities, and the proportions from universities in Canada, Australia and other countries and regions totaled 32.74%. It can be seen that the United Kingdom and the United States are still the most chosen study destinations for mainland Chinese students.

The “White Paper” data shows that in 2022, there will be a total of 391 schools in mainland China offering AP courses certified by the American College Board, and have obtained the Oxford AQA (British Qualifications Assessment and Accreditation Association).memberThere are a total of 737 schools authorized to offer A Level courses by the Cambridge University International Assessment Department and Edexcel (Pearson Edexcel), and 85 international schools authorized by the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Program). In terms of quantity, key cities in mainland China mainly choose AP courses and A Level courses in terms of international courses, and the number of IBDP courses is far behind the other two types of courses.

With the increase in the number of applicants for studying abroad, the admission requirements of prestigious schools are generally rising. Applicants submit higher and higher language scores, choose more and more international courses, and the time to meet the standards is getting earlier and earlier. The degree of competition is intensified. The “White Paper” suggests that in the face of the trend of “involution” in standardized grades, parents need to make early decisions to help their children successfully enter prestigious international schools with high admission rates and competitiveness.

The “White Paper” was released by New Oriental International Education and an external professional research organization, covering nearly 10 years of data, hoping to contribute to the development of China’s international education industry and the cultivation of international talents. (over)
