More than 200 demonstrators paid tribute on Wednesday to a young man who died on a motorcycle last June in Sarcelles, after being chased by police. A white march organized in the presence of Assa Traoré, a figure in the fight against police violence.
A white march was organized on Wednesday afternoon in Sarcelles (Val-d’Oise), to ask “justice for Monzomba“. The procession, which brought together more than 200 people, including the parents and family of the victim, left from the RER station Garges-Sarcelles – near the place where the young man died – to the town hall of Sarcelles.
“No justice, no peace” or “police everywhere, justice nowhere“, chanted the demonstrators.
According to the account of a police source to AFP, the facts took place on the night of June 3 to 4, shortly before 5 a.m., when police officers from La Courneuve (Seine-Saint-Denis) chased the young man who had just run a red light. The motorcyclist would have fallen from his motorcycle and hit “only“a guardrail, still according to the same police source.
The 28-year-old victim died of his injuries. His family has since wanted access to the city’s CCTV footage. “From the moment we have the videos, justice can be done. We walk to get answers, so we can mourn“, told AFP Chris, a 37-year-old sports coach and friend of the family.
Following an intervention by Assa Traoré, a figure in the fight against police violence and close to the family, the father of the victim thanked the demonstrators for their support. “That’s what gives me strength“, he said. And to add: “I lost my son, no judgment can give him back to me“.
“He was like my big brother, he always accompanied us in our projects. There is a lack in our neighborhood, we no longer have anyone to confide in except our parentss,” Mohamed-Naïm, a 15-year-old resident, told AFP. Relatives of the young man described him as “calme“, “respectful“, investi “in religion“, with “a good heart“.
An investigation has been opened by the Pontoise public prosecutor’s office. The case was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), which has still not heard from the police according to a source close to the investigation.
