“White House Welcomes Korea-Japan Summit and Shuttle Diplomacy Restoration for Indo-Pacific Prosperity”

The White House welcomed the Korea-Japan summit to be held on the 7th and the restoration of shuttle diplomacy between the two countries. He also emphasized the positive impact of strong Korea-Japan relations in the Indo-Pacific region. Reporter Jo Sang-jin reports.

The White House said on the 5th that “we welcome the increase in cooperation between South Korea and Japan, our allies.”

A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council (NSC) said this in response to VOA’s request for comment on the holding of the Korea-Japan summit and the restoration of “shuttle diplomacy” between the two countries.

“Strong Korea-Japan relations support a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” he added.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is scheduled to visit Korea on the 7th for 2 days and 1 night to hold a summit meeting with President Yoon Seok-yeol.

The Korean President’s office evaluated Prime Minister Kishida’s visit following President Yoon’s visit to Japan in March, adding meaning that “shuttle diplomacy between the leaders is in full swing.”

Through this meeting, the two leaders are expected to reaffirm the importance of improving bilateral relations as agreed upon at the Korea-Japan summit in March and to share the importance of trilateral cooperation between the United States and Japan against the North Korean threat.

The Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to Korea is the first in five years and three months since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February 2018. It has been 12 years since I visited Seoul.

Earlier, the US State Department also welcomed the meeting between the two leaders of Korea and Japan and positively evaluated the move to strengthen bilateral relations.

“We welcome the news that Prime Minister Kishida will visit Korea a few weeks after President Yoon Seok-yeol visited Tokyo,” a State Department spokesperson said in response to VOA’s request for comment on the 3rd.
