White House sees possibility of new cases of Covid-19 in the US for travel from Mexico

Washington.- The White House is exploring the possibility that travel from Mexico may be contributing to a new wave of infections from coronavirus, more than the measures that the states have taken to resume economic activities.

The notion was discussed to some extent during a meeting of the working group on coronavirus from the government in the Crisis Room of the White House, which focused on identifying common elements among the new outbreaks. Authorities also considered how to increase response capabilities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sent teams to Arizona and other infection zones to try to track the outbreaks and contain them.

In addition to Arizona, other states that are registering recent increases in infections include: California, Texas, and North Carolina, especially in Hispanic communities. As a result, the working group reviewed whether those spikes could be linked to legal travel between United States and Mexico, who is experiencing a severe outbreak of coronavirus.

Two officials familiar with the discussions spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly of internal talks.

While the president Donald trump has made every effort to seal U.S. borders to immigrants seeking to enter the territory legally and illegally during the outbreak, U.S. citizens and permanent residents are still allowed to enter United Statesas well as agricultural workers.

The White House working group was also reviewing other causes of the recent increase in numbers, noting that the problems likely differ by location. Delays in reporting and the fact that some infected people undergo multiple tests to obtain authorization to return to work are other theories being explored.

Trump has long pointed to Mexico as a source of crime and disease in United States, and has used the health crisis to push some of its toughest immigration proposals, such as blocking asylum at the border and limiting the issuance of green cards to those living outside the country.
