[서울=뉴스핌]Reporter Park Gong-sik = White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on the 21st (local time) that Israel’s rule over the West Bank and Gaza Strip should be continued by the new Palestinian Authority.

This is interpreted as an indication that the United States will leave the formation of a Palestinian governing body to the Palestinian Authority after the end of the Gaza War.

According to Reuters, Sullivan, who visited Israel, said on Israel’s Channel 12 TV, “Ultimately, the rule of the West Bank and Gaza must be taken over by a renewed Palestinian government.”

He discussed with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu the issue of transitioning the military operation in Gaza to a more sophisticated and targeted phase, and said the talks were constructive and that there was broad agreement on strategic objectives and necessary procedures, but did not provide further details. .

U.S. officials said Sullivan will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, the temporary administrative capital of the Palestinian Authority, on the 22nd to discuss measures to prevent a recurrence of incidents such as the Gaza War and the October 7 Hamas raid on Israel, U.S. officials said. .

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity said Sullivan will discuss, among other things, the renewal and reconstruction of the Palestinian Authority and measures to prevent violence by extremist Israeli residents targeting Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 275 Palestinians in the West Bank have reportedly been victims of violence by Israeli residents.

The official said U.S.-trained Palestinian security forces have performed incredibly well in their mission to prevent Hamas violence in the West Bank following the October 7 attack, with many of them Palestinians remaining in the future in the months following the end of Israel’s military operation. He pointed out that they would be able to form the core of the ruling force.

“We are discussing issues with the Palestinians, Israel and regional partners, and that is one of many options,” he said. The official added that President Biden supports a two-state solution that seeks coexistence between an independent Palestinian state and Israel, but that it will not be feasible as long as Hamas remains the ruling force in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the White House said that Sullivan’s visit to the Middle East focused on resuming a humanitarian ceasefire and securing the release of additional hostages held in Gaza during a series of meetings.
