“Our point of view remains unchanged: Turkey’s F-35 program is incompatible with its use of the S-300 and S-400 missile systems,” said the White House National Security Council coordinator.
According to him, negotiations with representatives of the Turkish government on the issue of modernization of the Turkish armed forces continue.
“If Turkey can resolve our concerns about this, then the process of transitioning to the F-35 program could resume,” Kirby said.
What preceded
Turkey’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defense system has led to an impasse in relations with Washington, prompting the latter to introduce restrictions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
The US also kicked Turkey out of the F-35 fighter program in 2019 in response to the purchase, arguing the S-400 posed a threat to its fifth-generation combat aircraft.
But on January 30, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said that Washington could discuss the return of Turkey to the “family” of F-35 fighters.
