“I’ve heard there is. But I’ve never seen it before,” says a news report who sighted a white deer in Riehen BS on Thursday evening. The 18-year-old was walking with his girlfriend at the Fondation Beyeler when they discovered the animal in the bushes. “At first I thought it was an escaped goat,” he recalls. But then the white animal darted across the meadow with his whole herd. They disappeared into the forest on the other side.
Deer are often seen in the region. Especially on that Friedhof Hornli, the largest in Switzerland. The deer population has been growing for some time, which is why there has been talk of shooting some animals. However, there was strong resistance from the population.
As the «Basler Zeitung» writes, two white fawns were sighted in the Lange Erlen, not far from Riehen. The sighting occurred in early December. While it’s nice to see the animals, a gamekeeper urges you to leave them alone. Meanwhile, they need not be afraid of hunters: due to their rarity, they are usually not killed.
