Austrian Weather Forecast: Will Austria See a White Christmas?
Meteorologists are predicting a week of fluctuating weather patterns across Austria, with a meaningful chance of snowfall in the western regions, potentially leading to a white Christmas. While the weekend will see milder temperatures, a shift in weather systems is expected to bring colder conditions and precipitation by mid-week.
Friday will begin with widespread cloud cover, and significant snowfall is anticipated in mountainous areas, potentially reaching lower elevations. Northern and eastern regions can expect a mix of rain and snow at lower altitudes. however, conditions are expected to improve in the afternoon, with clearing skies, especially in Upper and Lower Austria. Temperatures will range from a low of 3°F (-16°C) to a high of 46°F (8°C).
Saturday will start with some localized fog, but mostly sunny skies are expected. However, clouds will move in from the west throughout the day, reducing sunshine, though the south and southeast should remain relatively sunny. Light to moderate winds are predicted, with potentially stronger gusts in the Vienna woods. Temperatures will range from a low of 17°F (-8°C) to a high of 46°F (8°C).
Sunday’s forecast shows a mix of conditions. While some clearing is expected south of the main Alpine ridge, the rest of the country will see cloudy skies with rain and snow above 2625-3609 feet (800-1100 meters). There’s a risk of freezing rain in certain areas, including East Tyrol, southern Burgenland, and the inner Alps. Temperatures will range from a low of 18°F (-8°C) to a high of 43°F (6°C).
By Monday, another weather system will bring more precipitation, with heavy snowfall anticipated on the northern side of the Alps. Lower elevations may see a mix of sleet and rain. The precipitation will spread eastward by evening. Earlier temperatures will range from 23°F (-5°C) to 36°F (2°C), with highs of 34°F (1°C) to 43°F (6°C).
Christmas Eve (Tuesday) will see Austria situated between a low-pressure system over the black and Aegean Seas and a high-pressure system over the Bay of Biscay, resulting in a cold northerly flow. Expect more snowfall, particularly on the northern side of the Alps, with heavy snowfall in some northern areas. The eastern lowlands may also see some snow showers, especially in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from a low of 23°F (-5°C) to a high of 41°F (5°C).
