The snow has settled over large parts of Eastern Norway. And now the meteorologists can say it with absolute certainty: it will be nice and white in Østafjell both on Christmas Eve and beyond during Christmas.

The night before Christmas Eve, it will drop to minus ten degrees in several places in the Oslo area. During the day on Christmas Eve, it will be a little milder. A low pressure brings snow that continues into the evening.

It will neither be bitterly cold nor windy. It will simply be a white Christmas with snow in the air.

– It will probably be a nice setting for many, I think, says Per Egil Haga about the Christmas weather. He is a meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute.

Great skier

During Christmas, several days of fine and clear winter weather are expected in Eastern Norway. The Ski Association promises a Christmas atmosphere and great skiing. There are pistes ready all over the Oslo area.

– There will be good opportunities for sun in the days after Christmas, says Haga.

In the center there are good opportunities for sledding and playing in the snow.

Towards the New Year’s weekend, a new low pressure may arrive, which provides a replenishment of snow.

Difficult conditions in the mountains

– In Southern and Western Norway, the weather will be more challenging on Christmas Eve. The low pressure is more pronounced there, says Haga.

There will be strong winds and a lot of precipitation. In Rogaland and in Southern Norway, rain can freeze to ice at night. There will be a lot of wind in the mountains on Christmas Eve and challenging driving conditions in the mountains in southern Norway for those going home.

The dusty weather continues on Christmas Day.

It will be a little quieter during the week. But towards the New Year’s weekend, another low pressure will arrive with lots of wind and precipitation.

– The wind may increase as early as Thursday. So it may be difficult to get over the mountain in southern Norway towards the weekend, explains Haga.

The weather may calm down closer to New Year’s Eve, but it is more uncertain.

Storm surge from Southern Norway and to Vestfold

A special tidal phenomenon is expected to occur on Christmas Day: There will be storm surges on the Skagerrak coast from Southern Norway up to Vestfold. The storm surge probably does not reach as far as the Oslofjord.

– This means that the water level there will be significantly higher than what we usually have. So people in the area have to check the moorings on their boats and watch out for things in the beach zone, says Haga.

Storm surges can occur when low pressure coincides with a full moon. (You can read more about it at the Mapping Authority).

Nice in the North during Christmas

From Trøndelag and northward, fine winter weather is expected on Christmas Eve and during Christmas. The only exception is Finnmark, where low pressure can cause snow on Christmas Eve.

– It will be cold and a wintry type of weather in the north, says Haga. Extreme temperatures are not expected and it looks like it will be wintry in the Christmas season.
