São Paulo (AFP) – The Brazilian soccer star Neymar has come under fire for a giant New Year’s Eve party that he allegedly planned despite the corona pandemic. However, his lawyers denied on Monday that such a large party was planned.

Brazilian newspapers reported at the weekend that the 28-year-old wanted to celebrate the turn of the year with 500 guests over several days in his villa in Mangaratiba in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. The superstar of the French serial master Paris St. Germain was then hit by criticism.
In contrast to Neymar, other football superstars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did not make headlines “with a party for hundreds of people during this pandemic”, wrote the well-known Brazilian sports commentator André Rizek on the online service Twitter. With his party plans, Neymar falls behind the “level” that he reaches on the football field.
According to media reports, special noise protection devices are said to have been installed in Neymar’s villa so that the neighbors are not bothered by his New Year’s Eve party. It is also planned to temporarily confiscate the guests’ cell phones at the entrance so that no material from the celebration is spread over the Internet.
Neymar’s lawyers, however, told the AFP news agency that the footballer just wanted to spend New Year’s “with his family, his son and his physiotherapist.” Neymar is currently curing a left ankle sprain he sustained during a league game against Olympique Lyon just before Christmas.
