Ten matches were played in the third round of the 1991 Apertura, but the number of goals scored remains a record.
The Rosario derby was one of the matches of the date with the fewest goals in the history of Argentine football.
The weekend of September 14, 1991 saw one of the most unusual dates in the history of Argentine football: ten matches were played on the third day of the Apertura Tournament, since at that time there were 20 teams in the First Division, but only six goals were scored, and three of those were in a single match.
The most attractive match of that date of the 1991 Apertura was the Rosario classic that was played on Sunday at the Gigante de Arroyito, where there was precisely one of the six goals that were scored during the day. Central won 1-0 against Newell’s thanks to a goal by Marcelo ‘Chelo’ Delgado, but the match had the added bonus of six players being sent off: Ariel Cuffaro Russo, Delgado and Silvio Andrade for Canalla; and Julio Saldaña, Mauricio Pochettino and Fernando Gamboa for Lepra.
On the other hand, the match with the most goals was Platense 1-2 Talleres, which accounted for half of the goals of the entire matchday. Juan Carlos Ruiz Díaz and Mario Bevilacqua scored for the Cordobans, while goalkeeper Javier Zeoli, against his own goal, did the same for Calamar.

The other two matches that also had goals were Boca-Ferro and Vélez-Deportivo Español, and in both cases the home team won 1-0: Xeneize won thanks to a goal by Ariel Boldrini, while Esteban González gave Fortín a hard-fought victory by scoring at 43 minutes of the second half. In this way, only six goals were scored in one match, an unprecedented milestone in Argentine football that still stands.
The remaining six matches ended 0-0 and were Belgrano-Mandiyú de Corrientes, Gimnasia-Huracán, Racing-River, Unión de Santa Fe-Independiente, Quilmes-Estudiantes and Argentinos-San Lorenzo. It is worth remembering that the classic between the Academia and the Millonario was suspended in the second half due to an aggression by the local fans against the goalkeeper Ángel Comizzo, and later the Disciplinary Court of the AFA declared the match won by La Banda by 1-0.
