Mulled wine, waffles and many gift ideas actually shape the run-up to Christmas on the Christmas and Advent markets in Germany. But this year everything is different. Which markets are down because of the pandemic?

To protect against corona infection, many cities have already decided to do their this year Christmas Market to cancel. Others are still discussing their market or, despite everything, want to allow it to take place with access restrictions and hygiene rules, for example. We give you an overview.

What are the general rules for Christmas markets?

Currently (as of November 26, 2020) there is no general nationwide ban on Christmas markets. Nevertheless: If markets take place, then only under special conditions and depending on the infection rate in your region.

Basically, when visiting the Christmas market, as at any event, you should avoid crowds, keep a distance of 1.5 meters from others and wear an everyday mask where the distance is not possible, according to the Ministry of Health.

Ultimately, each federal state and in some cases even each city or municipality currently decides for itself whether or not Christmas markets can take place.

These Christmas markets are canceled this year:

  • Berlin: All Christmas markets are closed until November 30th, including the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace, the Gendarmenmarkt, Alexanderplatz and the Rotes Rathaus
  • Bonn: Bonn Christmas market
  • Bremen: Bremen Christmas market
  • Dortmund: Despite long planning, the “Dortmund Christmas City” was canceled at the end of October.
  • Dresden: Christmas markets at the Frauenkirche, Striezelmarkt, other Christmas markets
  • Düsseldorf: Christmas market in the city center
  • Erfurt: Christmas market on the cathedral square
  • Frankfurt am Main: Christmas market on the Römerberg
  • Freiburg: Freiburg Christmas market
  • Friedrichshafen: “Lake Constance Christmas”
  • Hamburg: The Christmas markets in Hamburg have been canceled.
  • Hannover: Christmas markets in November are banned throughout Lower Saxony.
  • Karlsruhe: Karlsruhe Christmas Market
  • Kiel: Kiel Christmas Market
  • Cologne: Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral, “Market of Angels”, Christmas market in the old town
  • Leipzig: Leipzig Christmas Market
  • Lübeck: Christmas market in the old town
  • Magdeburg: The preparations for the Christmas market went on for a long time, but then the market was canceled.
  • Munich: Christmas market at Marienplatz, markets in the districts, Christmas market at the Chinese Tower, medieval market at Wittelsbacherplatz and the Winter Tollwood
  • Nürnberg: The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt was canceled.
  • Potsdam: “Blue shine of lights”
  • Rostock: The market was initially supposed to be smaller, but then it was canceled.
  • Stuttgart: Stuttgart Christmas Market
  • Wiesbaden: Shooting star market

These Christmas markets should take place according to the current status:

  • Berlin: From December 1st, some Christmas markets are to open, including the Christmas market at the Gedächtniskirche, the Steglitz Christmas Market and the Great Berlin Christmas Market.
  • Dresden: Among other things, there are plans for: Dresden Winter Lights, Advent on the Neumarkt, Medieval Christmas Market
  • Essen: The market in the city center is to take place as “Christmas Market Light”.
