The break-up of Real has ended for the time being. The surprise: Around 63 locations are to be retained. But which Real branches will that be?
Cologne/Düsseldorf – What was considered very unlikely just a few months ago is now set to actually happen: although the Real hypermarket chain is being broken up, around 60 locations are to continue to be operated as Real. This means that the break-up of Real by the Russian investor SCP has come to an end, at least for the time being. The financial company has given the remains of Real GmbH to the family office of restructuring expert Sven Tischendorf. However, some questions remain unanswered. Above all: Which Real stores will remain under the old name?
Real Breakup: Which Markets Remain Real?
So far, most Real locations in Germany have either been taken over by another chain of department stores – Kaufland, Edeka and Globus have stood out in the first place – or they have been closed because they were not economical enough. But for a total of 63 Real branches, there is still a perspective due to the surprising turnaround regarding SCP and Sven Tischendorf. “These are branches for which the decision as to whether they will be closed or sold or remain with Real was not yet clear,” says Real. How many of the current Real markets would ultimately remain with Real, however, cannot be said at the moment, a spokesman continued.
At the beginning of April it was announced that further Real branches should remain. These Real markets are to be continued under the old name (as of April 7, 2022):

Real: Around 60 branches will remain Real – if the Federal Cartel Office agrees
At the time of the breakup, the Real department store chain operated around 270 branches in Germany. The Federal Cartel Office has approved the sale of up to 160 Real stores over the past few months. Kaufland, Edeka and Globus take over a large part of it. Around 60 more Real stores are now to remain under the old name, i.e. continue as “Real”. At the beginning of March 2022, the Federal Cartel Office approved the receipt of 58 Real stores.
It is currently planned that the Tischendorf family of entrepreneurs will take over the management of Real on July 1st. According to SCP Retail boss Patrick Kaudewitz, this would also permanently secure around 5,000 jobs and 130 jobs in administration.
