Suara.com – Many people suggest women should urination after have sex. But, there are also those who suggest women should urinate before sex.
Basically, urinating before or after sex is recommended to prevent urinary tract infections (ISK). This condition occurs when foreign bacteria enter the urethra and travel up from the urinary tract to the bladder or kidneys.
According to a 2017 study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, having penetrative sex has the potential to cause the penis to push bacteria into the urethra.
This is because certain strains of vaginal bacteria, namely gardnerella vaginalis, can cause recurrent UTIs by signaling inactive e.coli bacteria due to a previous infection to start multiplying again.

In this case, this urination can help clear the urinary tract. This urination can clear some of the bacteria that cause UTIs before they reach the bladder and multiply.
But, which is more important between urinating before or after sex to prevent ISK?
According to Dr Sarah Horvath, a gynecologist in Philadelphia, News 24, you may not need to urinate before having sex medically.
Moreover, Dr Horvath said that most women do not need to think too much about the rules of urination after sex, except for those who are prone to UTIs.
However, people who suffer from frequent UTIs should practice good sexual health practices. Make sure you pay close attention to intimate hygiene, wash your hands frequently and use a new condom every time you have sex.

Additionally, Dr Horvath says that you should stay hydrated as this keeps fluids flowing through the urinary tract and helps flush out bacteria.
“Although I always encourage patients to urinate before and after sex, there isn’t a lot of scientific data to support this habit,” said Dr Mary Jane Minkin, a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale University.
Even so, Dr Mary Jane still advises her patients to stay well hydrated and not forget to urinate. If you have frequent UTIs, Dr Mary Jane recommends seeing a health care provider.
You can also consume cranberry juice which is not too much sugar. Because, cranberries can prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.
You also need to remember that UTIs are not only caused by not urinating before or after sex. Holding in your urine can also increase your chances of getting a UTI.
