JAKARTA – If you want to feel the temperature cold no kidding, it feels like there are two locations that are ‘top of mind’. Especially if it’s not the North Pole and the South Pole.
Processed from Live Science, Monday (6/6/2022), the cold temperature to the snow that covers the two poles cannot be separated from their position, above (north) and below (south) of planet Earth. So what’s the deal?
As a result of this position, these two poles do not get direct light from the Sun. Both the North and South Poles always set low on the horizon even in the middle of summer.
When winter comes, the Sun is very far below the horizon. This, causes the Sun does not appear for months at the North Pole and South Pole.
In addition, the surface of the ice and snow at the two poles is very reflective.
That is, every time there is energy from the sun that radiates, it will be reflected back into space to keep the air above the polar surface relatively cold.
The North Pole and the South Pole may look similar. Both were filled with ice and of course very cold.
However, isn’t one of the two cooler?
Of course there is. According to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the South Pole is much colder than the North Pole.
Just imagine, the average annual temperature at the South Pole during winter can reach -76 F (minus 60 C).
Meanwhile for the North Pole, the temperature is slightly warmer, namely minus 40 degrees Celsius.
Even in summer the North Pole and South Pole have temperature differences.
If the South Pole reaches 28.2 Celsius, the North Pole hits 0 Celsius. On the other hand, the South Pole also ‘wins’ in terms of having a lot of ice.
This is because the South Pole aka Antarctica is home to land ice in addition to sea ice. Overall, Antarctica has about 90 percent of all the world’s ice.
