While we were preparing a review of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, I personally was asking the price and deciding who might urgently need such a smartphone, especially after a noticeable change in the price level in Russia.
As for me, there are now 6 categories of iPhone owners. Depending on who you consider yourself to be or actually belong to, the need to generally look towards a new iPhone or stay with the old one is determined.
I won’t write much – for that, it’s better to go to the review.
1. You have an old iPhone: iPhone 11, Xs, XR
What to do: It’s time to update, no doubt. These devices are already significantly outdated. Moreover, the new iOS 17 works so-so on Xs and XR, and iOS 18 will obviously not be released for them at all.
However, I advise owners of regular iPhone 11, iPhone XS, iPhone 8 and so on not to buy the iPhone 15, but the iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. The latter are preferable solely because for the same money or even cheaper you will get identical hardware, a 120 Hz display, subjectively the same photos, plus one telephoto camera and LiDAR.
Why don’t I recommend iPhone 15, 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max? Why do you need it, objectively, if you spent so long with an old iPhone? Taking into account the high price in Russia for new models and the not the best characteristics of the regular iPhone 15 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, last year’s model will be enough for you.
If you have an iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max, you haven’t burned out the battery and are generally happy with the performance of the hardware – only then do I see the point in waiting for the next generation. This is the only exception.
2. You have a “regular” iPhone: iPhone 12, iPhone 13 or iPhone 14
What to do: take iPhone 14 Pro or Max. As I already said, they are better than the “regular” iPhone 15, and the price will be even cheaper than them. You will immediately notice the difference in performance, smoothness of animations on the display, and quality of photos.
I recommend not to be embarrassed by the large size of the case and look straight towards the iPhone 14 Pro Max. A large battery makes the difference, you will adapt quickly and will not regret it.
3. In your iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max
What to do: we can wait for next year. The only exception may be dissatisfaction with the quality of photos or very frequent use of the smartphone for games. There is a really big difference in 3D performance between the 12 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max.
4. In your iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max
What to do: relax, walk around for a year. I’m with you, I still use 13 Pro Max. Despite a lot of small interesting points, from the shape of the case to USB-C, I decided to wait for the next generation.
Looking at the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, I can easily understand those who really want it, but I can’t explain to myself why pay the cost of an advanced MacBook Pro with the newest processor for only a 10-15% better smartphone than I already have. Something like this.
5. In your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max
What to do: never mind. Your iPhone is already better in almost everything than the basic iPhone 15 models. But in the new firmware, apart from USB-C and other forms, nothing special awaits you.
Even if you take 100,500 photos and videos, and you were impressed by the part about cameras at the Apple presentation, according to reviews and reviews of the first wave, the difference in photo quality is not at all that significant. It’s just that making crops is now a little more pleasant.
6. You basically just want a new iPhone, period.
What to do: buy a new iPhone 15 Pro Max. There’s nothing else you can recommend here. We were all there, as they say. If you want it and can do it, don’t deny yourself.
The only thing is that I would wait for the prices to drop at least a couple of weeks. But if you have the opportunity to buy it in other countries yourself or order a device through friends, then you don’t have to delay. Just remember that right now the firmware is sold out in many Apple Stores, and the issuance of pre-orders may take a couple of weeks. Plan for this when planning a trip or asking colleagues/friends to pick up the device at the store.
PS You have iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 13 mini
What to do: hold your iPhone to your chest and don’t give it to anyone for years until it falls apart. There are no more like them 🙁
