Which folk festivals will take place in Lower Franconia in 2022?

This Saturday, March 26th, the spring folk festival starts in Würzburg. It lasts until April 10th and becomes a kind of nationwide test run: With corona protection measures such as the 3G rule for vaccinated, recovered or negatively tested visitors as well as access controls, it is the first large folk festival in Bavaria to take place since the beginning of the pandemic.

After two years of the corona pandemic, major events such as the spring folk festival should be possible again this year. What about other well-known festivals in the region? Will they also take place? A survey shows that there is optimism in many places in Lower Franconia – but which rules will apply is often not yet clear.

An overview of the current status.

Wine Festival in the Würzburg Citizens’ Hospital and Würzburg Wine Village (May 25th to June 6th)

In the past, the Würzburg Bürgerspital opened the wine festival season with the wine festival in the wine press hall. The festival for April 8th and 9th is also still planned in the city’s festival calendar. But now the risk was too high for the organizers: “We canceled,” it says with regret.

The Würzburg Wine Village, on the other hand, is to take place again after a two-year break – from May 25th to June 6th. The hosts have started planning.

Volksfest Schweinfurt (June 17th to 27th)

In Schweinfurt, the city administration is certain: there will be celebrations again this year on the fairground near the Willy-Sachs-Stadion. However, it is still too early to say under which corona restrictions, says Kristina Dietz from the city’s press office.

Kiliani folk festival in Würzburg (July 1st to 17th)

Würzburg’s city spokesman Christian Weiß said on request that it is currently assumed that the events announced in the festival calendar can take place again in Würzburg – above all the Kiliani folk festival on the Talavera from July 1st to 17th. Under what conditions has not yet been decided.

“We encourage everyone to be able to plan,” says Weiss. The final decision will not be made until April in Munich: In Bavaria, rules such as the obligation to wear masks in certain areas will be retained until April 2nd due to a transitional regulation. The question of how things will continue depends on where you can celebrate again, says Weiss.

Weinfest am Stein (July 13th to 26th)

There is optimism at the Weingut am Stein in Würzburg: according to a current press release, it is assumed that the wine festival will take place there. Of course, it is “not yet possible to estimate which corona rules will still exist in July,” it says. But: “We are prepared for a lot and confident that we will be able to comply with the regulations of the Bavarian Infection Protection Act that will then apply.” If something comes up, the organizers assure that tickets already purchased will be refunded.

Spessart festival weeks in Lohr (July 29th to August 7th)

Will there be the Spessart Weeks in Lohr (district Main-Spessart) this year? According to a spokeswoman for the city, the Main Spessart citizens’ network caused irritation and put off the revelers until next year. “466 days left until the Spessart Festival Week from July 28th to August 6th, 2023,” it said on the website – “Corona” was stamped in bold over a photo of the marquee.

“That’s wrong,” says the spokeswoman for the city administration. “We are already planning for this year.” But how the festival will go is not yet known.

Laurenzi Fair in Marktheidenfeld (5 to 15 August)

“It is not yet known exactly what the trade fair will look like due to the pandemic,” said Marktheidenfeld (Main-Spessart district) on request. “But one thing is certain: After a two-year break due to the pandemic, a visit to the Laurenzi fair on the fairground in Marktheidenfeld is definitely worthwhile.”

What applies to the spring folk festival in Würzburg

According to the city of Würzburg, there should be a 3G regulation (vaccinated, recovered or tested negative) as a prerequisite for access to the marquee. According to the city administration, access controls are not planned at the entrances and exits of the fenced fairground on the Talavera, contrary to original information.

The city had emphasized to the end that protective measures such as the obligation to wear masks could be withdrawn or tightened at short notice. The hygiene rules known from gastronomy will probably apply in the marquee. In addition to the marquee, the shops are also set up, parking is still possible on the Viehmarktplatz below the Friedensbrücke.
