The Olympic Games officially ended last Sunday. Sports such as breakdancing were added to the Paris Games for the first time, however its appearance appears to have been brief as it will not be seen at the Los Angeles Games for four years.
Another sport is expected to take its place. Specifically, cricket is one of five new sports to be introduced at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The IOC approved cricket’s inclusion last year, along with baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (six) and the squash.
It will be only the second time cricket has appeared at the Olympics, having made its debut more than a century ago. This time, the popular T20 format will make an appearance at the Olympics, with Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar celebrating this ‘golden opportunity’ for men and women players to showcase their sport to the world.
“After waiting more than a century, our beloved sport is returning to the Olympic stage in LA28,” he told X.
“This marks the dawn of a new era for cricket as it will be a golden opportunity to promote participation and showcase new talent from emerging cricketing nations. A start to something really special!”, he concluded.
When was cricket in the Olympics?
Cricket returns to the Olympic program for the first time since 1900. Back then, Paris hosted its first Olympics, which were only the second modern Games after Athens in 1896.
In terms of cricket, it was just a men’s match between Great Britain and France played two days after Holland and Belgium withdrew. Taking place at the Vélodrome de Vincennes, a cycling venue, Great Britain won the race.
The schedule for T20 cricket will be finalized a few weeks before the start of the 2028 Olympics.
