which destinations do the French choose?

The All Saints’ Day holidays are gradually becoming a part of the French calendar. This year, reservations for accommodation between individuals are up 3.5% on the real estate advertisement site Pap.fr compared to 2023 *.

The South of France and abroad are doing well.

The South, half cheaper on All Saints’ Day

At this time of year, destinations in the South of France charge prices half as high as in summer, because they struggle to attract tourists.

“These holidays remain an opportunity to go for an affordable price: the price differences with summer are very significant and can go from simple to double”notes Pap.fr. “It must be said that although inflation is falling according to the latest macroeconomic indicators, it is still very present in the daily lives of the French. And so they act accordingly. Result: All Saints’ Day is popular. »

The price of an apartment per week drops below the symbolic bar of €500. For example, renting such a property on the Côte d’Azur for a week costs on average €456.

And for houses, we go below the symbolic threshold of €1,000 (€994 on the Côte d’Azur). Going to the South can become more economical.

It costs €363 to rent an apartment for a week in Languedoc, compared to €383 in Normandy and €439 in Vendée.

The search for the sun

For these holidays, the French are maximizing their chance of finding the sun by going to the sea, facing a summer which has been punctuated by violent storms.

It is the southern coastal departments which record the strongest growth on Pap.fr: Hérault with + 16.8% of reservations compared to 2023, the Alpes-Maritimes (+ 15.3%), the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (+ 11.8%) and the Pyrénées-Orientales (+ 9.6%).

Conversely, the northern regions, known for their uncertain weather, are today shunned by the French. This is the case for Normandy, but also for the north side of the Atlantic.

Calvados shows reservations down by -21.7%, Charente-Maritime by -8.9% and Loire-Atlantique by -5.1%.

Southern Europe also popular

For similar reasons, the French choose to go to southern Europe. Countries like Spain (+21% in reservations) or Portugal (+12.4) are doing well at this time of year.

They are much more affordable than many French seaside resorts.

* Study carried out from 3,566 reservation requests made between July 1 and October 10, 2024, compared to reservations made for the 2023 All Saints’ Day holidays
