Which cars in Germany failed the MOT: not even two Škodas can beat the result, Tesla is the biggest loser – Garáž.cz

The TÜV organization (abbreviation for Technical Inspection Association) analyzed over 10 million cars that underwent a technical inspection in Germany between last year and this summer. The website Svolávačky.cz, with a link to local sources, informs that with a share of 20.5% of “significant” or “dangerous” defects, roughly every fifth vehicle failed. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 0.3 percentage points.

The older the vehicles, the more problems are logically recorded during technical inspections. While “only” 5.7% of two- to three-year-old cars failed, in the case of twelve- to thirteen-year-old used cars, we are already talking about 28.9 percent! For Germans, the condition of older cars is increasingly important, as the vehicle fleet of our western neighbors is also aging. While in 2011 the average age was 8.3 years, this year it is over ten years.

But even less than six percent for practically brand new pieces is alarming. The TÜV organization did not just stick to general numbers and pointed to specific models. At the bottom of the list of cars manufactured between 2020 and 2021 is the Tesla Model 3, where 14.7% of these cars fail due to serious defects. The result of Dacia Logan (11.4%), Seat Alhambra (10.3%), Opel Crossland (10.2%) or Dacia Dokker (10.2%) is not something to brag about either.

Apart from the percentage of inspection failures, TÜV also monitors the average mileage of cars. At the same time, the analysis emphasizes that the statistics do not in any way take into account the owner’s approach and care towards the particular car.

Surprisingly, two Škodas are also included here – 9.1% of the tested Scala cars and exactly nine percent of the Superbs failed the German MOT. Dacia Sandero, for example, is better off among young used cars, where a significant technical problem appeared in 8.8% of cars.

Why is this so surprising? Concern cars are otherwise dominated by statistics from the opposite end, five of the ten most reliable young used cars come from Volkswagen or Audi. In addition to them, a pair of Mercedes, a Mitsubishi ASX and a Toyota RAV4 fit here. Škoda has developed a taste for slightly older cars (four to five years old), where the Karoq ranks among the eight most reliable.

The average age of the German vehicle fleet is over ten years. In the Czech Republic last year it was even less than 16 years!
