Jorge Campos was one of the first international figures to arrive in the MLS (AP)

The MLS is a relatively young competition. It was created in December 1993, as a condition imposed by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on the United States to host the 1994 World Cup.

Initially, the tournament had only 10 teams, but has now grown considerably to include 29 clubs, including franchises from not only the United States but also Canada.

The growth of the MLS has not only been in terms of clubs, but also in terms of international fame.

In recent years, the club has sought to consolidate its position by bringing in stars and legends of world football in order to attract attention to its competition, repeating the “recipe” that it applied in the North American Soccer League (NASL), the predecessor of the MLS, when historic players such as Pelé, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and George Best, to name a few, joined its ranks.

This is how the MLS added contemporary stars to its teams such as David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Andrea Pirlo, Kaká, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Rafael Márquez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. And more recently, Javier “El Chicharito” Hernández, Carlos Vela, Gareth Bale, David Villa, not to mention the transfers of Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi.

These types of moves have made the MLS an interesting option not only for players looking to rub shoulders with top-level players, but also for soccer fans who want to continue watching their favorite stars.

In recent years, MLS has gained prominence in regional soccer and has even attracted international attention with the addition of renowned stars to its league. Its games are increasingly being watched outside of the United States.

Today there are great footballers in the MLS such as Lionel Messi, Carlos Vela, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Héctor Herrera, Lorenzo Insigne and Giorgio Chiellini. And throughout its history, important figures such as Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, Jorge Campos, David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Thierry Henry, Rafael Márquez, David Villa and Frank Lampard have joined the ranks.

To date, the Los Angeles Galaxy holds the record for titles with five MLS Cups, closely followed by DC United, which has won four awards.

As for the top scorers in MLS, there are notable names such as Chris Wondolowski with 171 goals, Landon Donovan with 145 goals, Jeff Cunningham with 134 goals, Jaime Moreno with 133 goals and Kei Kamara with 130.

As for the players with the most games played in MLS history, figures such as Nick Rimando stand out with 514 appearances, Kyle Beckerman with 498 matches, Jeff Larentowicz with 437 games, Kevin Hartman with 416 matches and Chris Wondolowski with 413 matches.
