The minder had apparently feared worse: I am very satisfied, said Robert Scheller at the end of the two-day budget deliberations of the city council on Friday shortly after 1 p.m. According to experienced town hall employees, it was the briefest deliberations in past decades: the committee only needed about nine hours on Thursday and Friday to process more than 160 requests from the ranks of the parliamentary groups.
I’m very satisfied
Robert Scheller – town marketer–
That does not mean, however, that there was no controversial discussion – on the contrary: On the second day, for the first time since the new appointments to the city council in May, the most important topic of the local election campaign was the future direction of urban transport policy. The Greens, partially supported by Linke / ZfW and SPD, applied in several places to completely cancel planning funds for larger transport projects or to postpone them to 2022, but were only able to partially enforce this.
It started with the budget earmarked 800,000 euros for the fourth and final construction section of Versbacher Strasse, which is to be reduced from four to two car lanes from Steinlein to Tnnig in favor of bicycle traffic facilities, parking spaces and trees.
We have a lasting interest in testing a tram route
The background is an analysis of the potential for a possible tram line to Versbach, which, according to the wishes of the applicants, should be waited for before the road is redesigned. Therefore, among others, Climate Mayor Martin Heilig (Grne) spoke out in favor of reducing the budget for 2021 to 100,000 euros and waiting for the result of the analysis in the coming year. We have a sustained interest in checking a tram route, emphasized Mayor Christian Schuchardt.
Among other things, CSU parliamentary group leader Wolfgang Roth spoke out against the cancellation of the funds. He described new tram projects as unrealistic. At the suggestion of construction consultant Benjamin Schneider, the funds for the renovation of Versbacher Strasse were finally halved to 400,000 euros. The city council will only decide on the approval in the course of the coming year.

The Greens consider a new building in the previous dimensions superfluous
Even with the planning funds for the expansion of the Greinberg node and the new construction of the Rottendorfer Strasse bridge, the applicants did not manage to have the planned funds withdrawn from the 2021 budget. The bridge over the railway tracks is in need of renovation, it is to be demolished and rebuilt after the Siligmller Bridge is completed. The Greens consider a new building superfluous, at least in the previous dimension with several lanes. Niklas Dehne emphasized that it was only necessary to find out what traffic volume could still be expected in the future.
A cancellation or postponement of the budget was rejected
A deletion or postponement of the planning funds was rejected for this item on the agenda as well as for the planned authorization of the Greinberg node. The junction is to have an additional access ramp from Nrnberger Strasse, which, in the opinion of the Greens, is no longer up to date.
The CSU sees it differently: Even better bike paths, additional bus lanes and a tram to Versbach only work with a conversion of the junction, countered Wolfgang Roth (CSU) to the applicants. He received support from the Versbach FWG city councilor Josef Hofmann, for whom the Greinberg is the ultimate solution for all problems in the north of Wrzburg.
Applications to improve the city’s cycling infrastructure were more successful
Applications to improve the cycling infrastructure in the city were more successful: The pool for improving the cycling infrastructure was increased by 200,000 euros to half a million, which also includes the funds for the planning of a new cycling bridge over Nürnberg Strasse . The city council followed by a large majority a compromise proposal made by the caretaker, after ZfW city councilors Wolfgang Baumann (300,000 euros) and Patrick Friedl von den Grnen (600,000 euros) were unable to prevail with significantly higher requests.
The CSU also agreed to the increase: We want to see overall concepts implemented for cycling, said Wolfgang Roth. Applications from the SPD and Greens to increase the money for bicycle parking facilities were also successful: an additional 200,000 euros will be available to the municipal building yard in 2021 for 1,000 parking spaces in bracket construction. The budget for the barrier-free expansion of the bus stops was increased by 100,000 euros to 250,000 euros.
The city council has now decided on additional expenditure of 1.6 million euros
Overall, the budget decisions will affect the financial planning for the years 2021 to 2024 with around four million euros more. For the budget year 2021, the city council has decided on additional expenditure of 1.6 million euros compared to the Kmmerer’s draft. The amount is not financed by loans, but by a further withdrawal from the reserve. The financing requirement in the budget year 2021 amounts to a total of 17.3 million euros. 10.7 million euros of this is covered by corona loans, 6.6 million by reaching into the reserves.
