Find out more about the filming location of “The Taste”, the preparations of the candidates, the special processes during filming and some surprising details.

“The Taste”, the popular cooking show on Sat.1, is filmed in the legendary Bavaria Studios in Munich. These studios have been a central location for the production of film and television in Germany for decades and offer optimal conditions for large-scale productions such as “The Taste”. But what makes this location so special and how does production actually work? Here you can find out more about Bavaria Studios and what goes on behind the scenes of the show.

The Bavaria Studios – A place with history

The Bavaria Studios in Munich are one of the most traditional and largest film and television studios in Germany. Since its founding in 1919, numerous important productions have been made here. The best-known include film classics such as “Das Boot” as well as popular series such as “Marienhof” and “Tatort”. International projects such as Oliver Stone’s “Snowden” or the fantasy film “The Neverending Story” were also created in these studios. Directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder and Wim Wenders have already worked here. The studios offer modern technology and large production areas, ideally tailored to the requirements of TV formats such as “The Taste”.

The filming process for “The Taste”

Ex-Candidate Hanna Reder (Season 9) told in the podcast “Zucker & Jagdwurst” 2021how filming goes on “The Taste”.

The entire filming of “The Taste” usually takes around four weeks and usually takes place in May and June. The production of an episode often takes several days. One of the reasons for this is that after the cooking scenes, many original sounds and interviews with the candidates and coaches have to be recorded. These are an important part of the show and provide insights into the participants’ minds.

The filming conditions for the candidates

Before the candidates even stand in front of the camera, they get a tour of the studio’s kitchens. This is necessary so that you can quickly find your way around the show kitchen. During the competition, candidates not only have access to the ingredients from the specified shopping cart – depending on the topic of the program, the range is expanded to provide the right ingredients for the challenges.

After preparing their spoons, the candidates have the choice of how they should be stored until tasting: in the refrigerator, at room temperature or in a warming device at 50°C. A certain amount of time passes between the serving and the blind tasting, which is also evident from the fact that the kitchens in the background are often already tidied up. The candidates also prepare another spoon for the camera, which will later be filmed for the TV presentation.

The tasting itself also follows a special ritual: the order is drawn to ensure fairness. Only then will it be decided who will make it to the next round and who will have to leave the show.

Other productions at Bavaria Studios

In addition to “The Taste”, numerous other well-known TV formats and films are produced at Bavaria Studios. These include, among others, the daily series “Sturm der Liebe” and the crime series “Rosenheim-Cops”. Large shows such as “Do you understand fun?” also take place here.
