Where is the over-indebtedness in the Alpes-Maritimes? The answer in 5 figures

The Banque de France took stock of over-indebtedness in 2022 in the Alpes-Maritimes department on Tuesday 14 February. We explain everything to you in 5 figures.

Despite general inflation, household over-indebtedness seems to be decreasing in France. Following this trend, the figures for the Alpes-Maritimes, presented this Tuesday, February 14 in the morning by the Banque de France, also show a drop.

Of the 113,000 over-indebtedness files filed in France in 2022, 2052 concerned maralpine foci. A person files a file when they can no longer meet their debts. In each department, the files are received by a commission responsible for examining them.

When a file is accepted, the over-indebted person benefits from some preferential measures to help him overcome this difficult time. For example, late payment penalties and interest are suspended, prosecutions (such as seizures) are stopped or even bank incident fees are waived.

In 2022, the Alpes-Maritimes are showing a drop in the number of files submitted compared to the previous year. This drop is higher than the regional average which amounts to 6% less files and than that of the national average which is 7% less.

In addition, the number of over-indebtedness files filed is almost twice less important than 8 years ago. In 2014, the Maralpins had filed 3939 files.

In a press release, the Banque de France details the origin of the debts in the files filed in the Alpes-Maritimes. 35% of debts are related to consumption, 28% are real estate debts and 23% are “other debts”says the press release without going into detail.

Compared to 2021, the share of consumer debt has increased, going from 33 to 35%. On the other hand, that of real estate debts to decrease: it was 30% in 2021 and is now 28%.

The Banque de France specifies that it has not observed any change linked to the increase in the price of energy in 2022.

When a case is filed, the Banque de France tries to find solutions. This may take the form of a redevelopment ortotal or partial cancellation of the debt. In the Alpes-Maritimes, 56% of over-indebtedness files closed in 2022 gave rise to total or partial cancellation of debt.

In 2022, nearly one in five people affected by an over-indebtedness file filed in the Alpes-Maritimes is unemployed. Three-quarters of cases concern tenants. Moreover, “nearly half of over-indebted households have nono ability to repay to meet their debts“, notes the Bank of France.

The Banque de France has created the number 3414 to be easily reachable by people who need it. At the other end of the line, people will find the Departmental Council for Financial Inclusion (CDIF) which can explain to them the possible systems within their territory.
