Summer 2022 begins with a new wave of covid. The lifting of health restrictions as well as the spread of a sub-line of Omicron favor the increase in the number of cases. Here’s what to remember

More than 100,000 positive cases of covid per day
The number of covid infections continues to climb. In his last report dated July 7, Santé Publique France reports that the incidence rate has increased by more than 50% in all regions of mainland France. It particularly increased in New Aquitaine (+73%) and in the Pays de la Loire (+77%). This Friday, July 8, 140,997 positive cases were detected (nearly 16,000 additional cases compared to the previous Friday).
The number of positive cases is probably underestimated “due to a certain fatigue with the declaration of the various actors”, estimates a avis of the Scientific Council rendered on June 23rd.

The latter had himself been infected by his owner. Felines are thus added to the list of animals likely to transmit the virus to humans.

A highly contagious Omicron variant
Sequencing data attest to the omnipresence of Omicron in France: between June 20 and 26, it represented 100% of positive cases in mainland France, according to Santé Publique France.
The BA.5 variant, a sub-lineage of Omicron, continues to progress. He is now the majority.
The symptoms remain the same: headaches, runny nose, fatigue. This variant is one of five Omicron sublines (BA.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4 and BA.5). It has mutations that make it even more contagious (but not more virulent). It would also seem that the symptoms are spread over a longer period: 7 or even 10 days, and that one is contagious longer.

The bar of 150,000 deaths from covid has been crossed
The covid epidemic has claimed 150,000 lives in France since the start. The symbolic level was crossed this Friday, July 8, 2022. The bar of 100,000 dead had been exceeded on April 15, 2021.
Regarding the number of hospitalizations, it increased by 16% between June 27 and July 3, compared to the previous week. New hospitalizations mainly concern the elderly, and individuals with little or no sufficient vaccination.
