Is refueling in Ostalbkreis and Baden-Württemberg more expensive or cheaper than in other places?
Petrol and diesel prices are often slightly higher on the border with neighboring countries such as Austria and the Czech Republic. There are rarely any major outliers in Baden-Württemberg – but sometimes you can save something by taking a trip to the neighboring district. The following map shows the previous day’s average prices for diesel, E5 and E10 in the districts and independent cities.
Please note: These are average figures. Individual gas stations can of course be significantly cheaper or more expensive – and of course the district administration has no influence on local gasoline or diesel prices.
How have fuel prices developed in Germany?
The prices for premium petrol and diesel follow a seasonal pattern: fuel is usually more expensive during the main holiday season in the summer months. Another important factor for the price of fuel is the price of crude oil on the world market; after all, the crude oil is processed into gasoline and diesel in refineries.

However, the price of oil is only one of several factors that influence prices at the pumps. The exchange rate of the euro to the dollar also plays a role, as crude oil is traded in dollars. Political decisions such as the fuel discount in summer 2022 also play a role. The following graphic shows the development of fuel prices in Germany since the beginning of 2022.
Data
The fuel price data is passed on by the Federal Cartel Office to providers of consumer information services. One of them is the portal tankerkönig.de, through whose interface the RND obtains the data. The prices are based on reports from all gas stations in Germany. We use this to calculate the daily average prices for diesel, Super E10 and Super E5. The data is updated daily.
What costs make up the price of fuel?
The price of fuel depends on a variety of factors. Taxes and the price of crude oil are particularly important.

The prices for petrol and diesel depend on the Energy taxthe VAT and the CO₂ tax together. The latter has been around since January 1, 2021.
There are also other factors that influence the price at the pump. In addition to costs for transport and storage, these also include contributions that the mineral oil companies have to pay to the German Petroleum Stockpile Association. Ultimately, in addition to the purchasing prices of the gas stations, the profit aspirations of the oil companies also have an impact.
At what time of day is refueling most expensive – when is it cheapest?
Here too, no general answer can be given. Nevertheless, the trends show that the Fuel prices are usually more expensive in the morning than in the evening. According to an evaluation by the ADAC (June 2023), the prices for gasoline (Super E10) and diesel change by several cents over the course of the day.
While the prices remain relatively constant until around 5 a.m., they rise significantly from 6 a.m. and reach Daily high between 7 and 8 a.m. Then petrol and diesel cost between 4 and up to over 5 cents more than the average.

After that, the prices fluctuate, with the trend being significantly downwards. Fuel is cheapest between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Then petrol and diesel are between 1.6 and up to 3.8 cents cheaper.

Why is refueling on highways so expensive?
According to ADAC samples, fuel at motorway filling stations costs significantly more on average than elsewhere. Petrol (E10) costs an average of 42 cents more, diesel is around 36 cents more expensive. Why the enormous price difference compared to conventional gas stations?
A key reason is that the tenants of motorway filling stations fight for the best locations in auctions. The resulting outbidding competition leads to high prices, which many experts believe are passed on to customers.
