To find a reason for the association of yellow and green, we have to go back to the creation of the club in 1943. Between racehorse, Ottoman governor and symbols, history course on FC Nantes.
Often nicknamed the Jaunes-et-Verts, FC Nantes owes its colors – and its nickname – to one of its founders: Jean Le Guillou. Alongside Marcel Saupin, he founded FC Nantes in 1943. But it remains to determine an identity at the club of the city of the Dukes.
From the racecourse to the football stadium
Before founding the club, Jean Le Guillou made a fortune, in part thanks to a policy of collaboration during the Second World War, in the building sector. He decides to invest in several sectors including horse racing. He owns a horse called Ali Pasha, in reference to the Ottoman governor, which excels on racetracks. Detail, it is ridden by a jockey dressed in a yellow and green jacket. Le Guillou then said to himself that given the success of this color association on the racetrack, why not use it on the football fields. This is how FC Nantes made yellow and green its colors.
Before the Canaries
A version of the story confirmed by Didier Hemion, passionate about FC Nantes. At the microphone of Tout Le Sport, he adds that yellow is a symbol of success and that green represents hope. In addition to the club’s colors, the nickname of the Nantes residents remains to be seen. But the Canaries did not win immediately. “Les Boutons d’or” was first the first nickname for FC Nantes players, before the Canaries took off for good.
