Where do all those mosquitoes come from so late in the year?

Maybe you also saw a mosquito in a corner of the ceiling somewhere. Or did you still hear them buzzing during an otherwise quiet November night. A background noise that you mainly associate with July and August. What are they doing here at this time of year? And why do experts think there is so little point in beating them to death?
