Over 100 people gathered on Simmern Palace Square to remind politicians that climate change is a real threat that requires immediate action. 100 people of all ages who responded to the call of the youth organization Fridays for Future. 100 people who justifiably worry that the world of our children and grandchildren will no longer be the same.
It was one of over 400 demos across Germany, over 100,000 people moved through Berlin alone, led by Greta Thunberg, the initiator of the climate protests, who in her speech urged that the 1.5 degree targets be adhered to limit global warming.
Hunsrück News reported on the rally in Simmern, on the chants “We are here, we are loud because you are stealing the future from us!” The reactions to our article on Facebook were mostly negative, even malicious, insulting, defamatory. Only one question arises: where does this hatred come from?
The demonstrators are insulted as “Gesocks”, as “idiots”, as truants, as work-shy, as Hartz IV recipients, they are denied respect for the older generation. Man-made climate change is also denied. To put it in the words of Greta Thunberg before the UN General Assembly: “How dare you?”
The founder of the climate movement denounced the inaction of politicians who do not do enough against the reasons for climate change. Hunsrück News is ashamed that so much hatred is dumped on our Facebook channel – on people who take to the streets for a future that is livable for all inhabitants of the planet.
Every democratic party running for today’s federal election has recognized that we have to limit carbon dioxide emissions, that we have to make the transition to a climate-neutral energy industry, that we can only do it together. Except, of course, the AfD.
Kerstin Chen asks: “Why do so many supposedly sensible adults react with ridicule, malice and hatred when something does not correspond to their opinion and their worldview?” We ask ourselves that too – and now and here everyone who makes this kind of comment have responded to our post. So how dare you?
