Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Not a few astronauts who died in space while carrying out their mission. Then, where are they buried?
As it turned out, this depended on where they died. NDTV notes that if an astronaut dies in low-Earth orbit, such as the International Space Station (ISS), he will be returned to Earth in a matter of hours.
Meanwhile, NASA already has a protocol if an astronaut dies on the Moon. The bodies can be returned in a few days to Earth, quoted from NDTV, Thursday (10/8/2023).
With a quick return time, the astronaut’s body does not need to be preserved. NASA will also focus on safely returning the remaining crew to Earth.
However, a different protocol will be followed while the astronauts are en route to Mars. Astronauts who die will not be immediately returned to Earth.
The reason is because the mission crew to Mars will find it difficult to turn around and return to Earth. So the new body will come home with the rest of the crew when the mission ends, or it could mean years later.
Preservation of the body in a separate room is likely to be carried out in this case. Astronauts who die will be put in a special body bag.
In Space Without Special Suit
Astronauts are required to wear space suits when going into space. The reason is because their lives cannot survive in that environment.
They can immediately die while in space without using this special suit. The cause, the pressure loss and exposure that occurs in a vacuum.
The same situation can also occur in astronauts without special clothes on the Moon or Mars. NDTV wrote the moon has no atmosphere, while Mars has a little atmosphere but almost no oxygen.
So the astronaut will definitely feel the same way as in a vacuum. Namely experiencing suffocation and boiling blood.
