Emma Kristine Kitty Mack, or just Kitty Mack, as she likes to call herself, was the first local feature this year on Rakettnatt.
She has only released a handful of solo singles, and the lion’s share of them have come within the last two years. In addition, she contributes vocals to the song “Stay” by the artist Oskar Med K.
Some may also have caught the Christmas song “Xmas Darling” that she released in 2020, which as far as I know is only available on Youtube.
At Satellitscenen, she was accompanied by three musicians and two choirs. This early in the career, such a difficult stage can go a long way for an artist who is completely in the starting pit.
It wasn’t exactly smooth in front of the stage, but it was nice that several attendees handed out posters of Kitty’s home, kind of like the end of Idol.
It became very clear very quickly that she is not among the most used and used main areas of the festival, something that should be completely forgotten when the artist is so new that around half of the setlist consists of songs that have yet to be released.
Here, at least, there is a lot to work with, both in terms of the music and the “showmanship” aspect. Mack is certainly not a bad singer, but he still has to develop that great individuality. For the most part, I found strong connections with Silya Nymoen, just without the same charisma.
The band was made up of fairly skilled musicians, but it got a little too generic and boring in the long run, and maybe a little too much studio-flinky vibes for my taste, where the bass reference quickly ends up somewhere between line-funk music and music. Your sound. A little celebration session at Smuget and a lot of “2-5-1”, as the jazz musicians like to say.
Admittedly, some songs stood out more from this recipe. First up was the forthcoming single “In 20 Years”, which veered a bit more towards 70’s disco and early Cardigans. Just try singing the chorus from “Lovefool” over this one and you’ll see what I mean.
Another unreleased song, which she introduced as “a bit Christmassy and romantic”, was the highlight for me, where a 50’s American pop inspiration suddenly appeared out of nowhere. existence This is a genre that she dresses well, so I hope that she will continue in that direction sometime in the future.
The dialogue between the songs could use a little more planning and tighter direction. There was a lot of crazy talk – which lasted so long that she finally ran out of time, and had to stop at the last song.
The artist’s potential is there, but it still seems very unfinished, and may still need a lot of work before everything is where it should be.
