Internet via the super-fast 5G network? It is now possible, because different providers have the 5G network has already been turned on. For this you need a phone that supports 5G, and there is no such iPhone yet. But when will the first 5G iPhone arrive?
When 5G iPhone?
This will probably not be long in coming. All reliable Apple insiders Report it: the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro should be the first iPhones to support the 5G network. Apple wants to launch these devices this fall. They will probably be announced this month (in September). According to rumors, the iPhone 12 will be in stores from mid-October.
The timing for the 5G iPhone would be perfect, but the question is whether the support for the fast network is also available in the Netherlands. Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed earlier this year that 5G support is for a limited number of countries: the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom. In other countries, the support would not be there to reduce production costs.
It may also be that only the fastest form of 5G is not coming to the Netherlands: the mmWave technology. In that case, the iPhone 12 could connect to lower 5G frequencies: Sub-6 GHz. This network is slightly faster than 4G, but slower than mmWave. However, the range is larger and more stable, making it more suitable for densely populated areas.
But how bad is it?
So we seem to have to do without a 5G iPhone for the time being. At the moment that is not so bad. In 2022, the fast 3.5 GHz frequencies will be auctioned to the Dutch providers – and only from now on a big difference in speed is possible. Until then, you will notice little of 5G in daily use, there is at most a speed difference of about ten percent.
Still, it’s a shame, because a new iPhone will last for many years. In 2022, you’ll be disappointed if your iPhone 12 doesn’t support the fastest form of 5G. In that case – if a new iPhone is not in a hurry – you might want to wait for next year’s iPhone 13. Chances are that these devices are all equipped with mmWave.
Release iPhone 12
We will undoubtedly hear more about the first 5G iPhone soon. Traditionally, Apple will present its new flagships in September. Normally, the devices are also in the shops shortly afterwards, but due to the corona virus, it is uncertain whether this will also happen this year. According to various rumors, the production of the iPhone 12 has been delayed for at least a month. Chances are the iPhone 12 won’t be available until October, and the more expensive Pro models may be later.
