His income is now BGN 45,000 per month without bonuses. The topic stirred spirits in the election of a new governor. Asked if it was normal for the governor of the BNB to receive such a salary, Financier No. 1 Vladislav Goranov did not hesitate to say that he did not know what his remuneration was.
Let’s recall – it is calculated as an average value of the remuneration of the CEOs of several banks, which is BGN 45-50 thousand. It is not clear why, even in a state structure such as the BNB, it should be determined in relation to income in commercial companies whose profits are formed on a different principle. 8 years ago, the head of the BNB received 8 thousand per month. This is an increase of nearly 6 times, which is very far from the average increase in the income of the ordinary Bulgarian, as well as from the growth of income in the state administration.
“You can’t manage a banking system with BGN 100 billion assets, for example, and expect you to do it for BGN 1,000 salary,” Minister Goranov countered. It is true, no one disputes it, but his income should be taken into account with his native reality and with the income of other responsible positions in the state administration. Let’s recall that the people’s representatives, who draft hundreds of pages of bills and must expertly evaluate them (we are not commenting here on whether they do it adequately), receive BGN 2,886 per month for this. The chairman of the National Assembly receives 55% more than an ordinary deputy, or BGN 4,473.30. The most important figure in the administration of the cabinet – the prime minister – receives as much as the chairman of the parliament. Ministers, on the other hand, receive 35% more than ordinary MPs. The monthly remuneration of the president, which is two deputies’ salaries, amounts to BGN 5,772, without the supplements for professional experience. That is, the two leaders in the state officially earn ten times less than the governor of the BNB. Where is the logic and how does this income harmonize with the standard of living in the country? Because at the end of the day, we, the taxpayers, pay these colossal salaries. And in a country where a third of the population is below the poverty line, struggling every day for survival, it is sacrilege to have such a state income. For comparison, the head of the US Federal Reserve receives $16,808 per month (nearly BGN 29,000). I.e. the salary of the head of the BNB is 40% higher than that of the supreme institution determining the monetary policy of the United States.
