This Thursday, August 22, starting at 9:30 p.m. (Uruguay time), the rematch will be played at the Hernando Siles stadium in La Paza match in which the Brazilian team will not be able to count on Uruguayan footballer Giorgian De Arrascaeta.

If Bolívar wins by two goals, the match will be decided by penalties. If the home team wins by more than two goals, it will qualify for the next round. And if the Brazilian team wins, draws or loses by one goal, it will automatically be Peñarol’s rival in the quarterfinals.

Official background against Flamengo

At an official level, Peñarol and Flamengo have faced each other on six occasions: four in the Libertadores (1982 and 2019), and two in the 1999 Mercosur Cup.

The first clash between Carbonero and Mengão for the CONMEBOL Libertadores took place at the Centenario Stadium on October 19, 1982 for the first date of the second phase of the Cup. Manya won 1-0 with a goal by Ernesto ‘Pinocho’ Vargas in the 65th minute.

And on November 16 of that year, on the last date of the group that also included River Plate of Argentina, Peñarol managed to win 1-0 at the Maracaná (a great free kick goal by Jair at 25′) and qualify for the final of the Cup.

In 2019 These teams met again in the Libertadores, but in the group stage: on April 3 and in the third round, Peñarol won 1-0 at the Maracaná with a goal from the Argentine Lucas Viatri (88′) after a great cross from Lucas Hernandez.

That night, the team led by Memo Diego Lopez formed with Kevin Dawson, Giovanni Gonzalez, Cristian Lema, Fabricio Formiliano and Lucas Hernandez, Agustin Canobbio, Walter Gargano, Guzman Pereira, Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodriguez and Brian Rodriguez, and Darwin Nunez, entering in the complement Rodrigo Rojo, Gaston Rodriguez and Viatri.

Beyond this great victory in Brazil, Peñarol tied 0-0 against Fla in its Campeón del Siglo stadium on the last date of Group D and, although it added 10 points, it was left out of the Libertadores for having a lower goal difference than the Brazilian team and Liga de Quito.

The Uruguayan team and the Carioca team also faced each other in the semifinals of the 1999 Mercosur Cup: In the first leg played in Brazil, Flamengo won 3-0 with goals from Leandro (29′), Maurinho (44′) and Lê (82′). In the return match, Peñarol won 3-2 at the Centenario with goals from Pablo Bengoechea (45′ and 90′), and Martín ‘Tato’ García (79′); for the visiting team, Athirson (70′) and Reinaldo (78′) scored. After the end of this second match that sealed Fla’s qualification, serious incidents occurred between both teams.

In history there are also some records friendly between Peñarol and Flamengo: for example, on January 23, 1959 they faced each other at the National Stadium in Lima for an International Hexagonal Tournament and Manya won 2-0 with goals from Rubén Cocchinello (16′) and Carlos Borges (89′); and on February 8, 2006 they played a pre-season match at the Centenario in Montevideo that Carbonero won 2-0 with goals from Diego Rodríguez (17′) and Nicolás Vigneri (90′).
