The Rutte IV cabinet has fallen. Government parties VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie did not agree on a new asylum policy. What happens now? And when will new elections follow?
Follow the latest developments surrounding the fall of the Rutte IV cabinet in our live blog.
A fall of the cabinet means that the cabinet members quit before their four-year term of office is over. This happened at the beginning of 2021, when Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s third cabinet resigned a few weeks before the finish line. The reason was then a harsh judgment of a parliamentary committee on the benefits scandal.
Although the cabinet members submit their resignations, it does not mean that they are done: they continue ‘outgoing’. In fact, little changes then: ministers remain ministers and keep the same powers. They may take decisions and measures, and submit bills.
The difference is that a caretaker cabinet is not allowed to implement new policy. It may therefore only continue current policy. The House of Representatives can also decide to declare certain controversial subjects controversial. Then the outgoing cabinet may not take any action on this.
That caretaker cabinet will remain in place until a new cabinet is formed. Elections must be held first. That will only be (well) after the summer.
Before people can vote, parliament must first be dissolved. There is usually a period of time between the fall of the cabinet and the dissolution of parliament.
There is no deadline for that. If a cabinet collapses, parliament does not have to be dissolved immediately.
If parliament is dissolved, elections must be held within three months. With that, we would have new MPs from today, counting on October 7.
Then we have already voted and those votes have already been counted. In such a situation we would probably have to go to the polls in the course of September. But we’re not that far yet.
