When Will Max Verstappen Receive His Formula 1 Trophy? The Delayed Coronation and Gala Evening

Formula 1 and the International Automobile Federation have always done things somewhat their own way. While other world-class competitions present the trophy to the winner at the final stage of the championship or event, the world champion in Formula 1 has to wait for the coronation until the gala evening, which is traditionally held in December. It won’t be any different this year either.

With the growing number of fans, the possibility of awarding the trophy to the world champion immediately after becoming one at one or another event has been discussed recently. If such a proposal were given the green light, Max Verstappen would be officially crowned champion after the Qatar sprint. However, since the president of the FIA, Mohamed bin Sulayem, does not even want to hear about such a possibility, the Dutchman will have to dress in a tuxedo and obediently trudge to winter-clad Paris for the prize.

“It’s the night of the masters,” he said of the gala Sulayem for selected media, incl Motorsport.com. “You have no idea what a sleepless night I had before I arrived in France, in Paris, where I walked through the Place de la Concorde and was presented with the trophy for my first championship victory [Sulajem zvíťazil v Rely na Blízkom východe, pozn. red.].“

“Even now I can feel the hairs on my arms standing up because I remember being very young, only 25 years old. Going there is something you dream about, and other young people look at it the same way.” for which it would be according to Sulayem huge disappointment and demotivation if they could not see Max Verstappen with their own eyes.

“It’s a night of champions where young people can see a Formula 1 champion who is their idol. Do you want me to make sure their dream doesn’t come true? That’s definitely not going to happen. When you’re a pilot, you want to be like somebody. For young racers, the opportunity to participate in this day, the night of champions, is therefore a dream. Trust me.”

The important thing is that the way the current awarding system is set up doesn’t bother him either Max Verstappenwho, after all, already has two replicas for the championship winner at home. “It’s okay, they look the same” commented the 26-year-old Dutchman on the sidelines of the long wait for his third trophy in a row.

“I already have two trophies at home, and they don’t change. There is only one extra name on it. It’s okay, I don’t mind waiting a while. I have one trophy placed next to my simulator and the other one next to the TV.” revealed the newly minted world champion.
